December 2018 E-Newsletter

I am honoured to be writing to you today as the City Councillor for the new Ward 9, Davenport. Our new Ward is a truly wonderful place, spanning from Eglinton Ave W in the north to just south of Queen St W (click here for a map) and is a vibrant reflection of Toronto's history and diversity.

It has been a privilege to represent and work with many of you over the last 8 years and I am delighted to have the opportunity to now represent some of you for the first time.

Even with the change in Ward boundaries, I know that we have so much in common with one another. From the parks and community centres that we visit with our families, to our desire for better transit, housing, safer streets, a cleaner environment and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to succeed in our changing city, I know that we will work together with purpose and lasting results.

We held our first City Council Meeting earlier today where all 26 Members of Council (25 Councillors and the Mayor) were officially sworn into office. Over the coming weeks, City Council will meet a couple of times to determine office and staffing budgets, the Council structure for this term, Committee assignments and urgent business.

The start of a new term of City Council also brings new opportunities for the future of our community and city. I look forward to building on the many successes that we have achieved and the new things we will accomplish by working together as a community.

Over the coming months we will be setting up our expanded office at City Hall and in the community, hiring more staff to serve you, receiving briefings on files across our new Ward, meeting with community groups and working to implement our shared vision that we developed together during the campaign.

I would like to thank you and all Davenport residents for the strong mandate you have given to our vision and for the trust that you have placed in me for the next four years. I look forward to continuing to work with you to make our community more affordable, livable and safe.

I sincerely hope that you have a wonderful holiday season, spent with good cheer among family and friends and I look forward to seeing you out in the community!

In community,

Ana Bailão

Ward 9 – Davenport

Dufferin Mall Redevelopment Open House

The owners of the Dufferin Mall (Primaris Management Inc.) are currently exploring opportunities to redevelop the surface parking lots at the north part of the mall, where the Beer Store, Penningtons, and Taco Bell/KFC are currently located. I think that your involvement in this redevelopment is crucial and I am bringing this to your attention as soon as I became aware to ensure you have an opportunity to get involved.

The future redevelopment of this portion of the site is intended by Primaris to:

  • Introduce new uses to the site, including purpose-built rental housing;
  • Enhance the existing mall;
  • Create a better pedestrian experience along Dufferin and Croatia streets through improved streetscaping and new retail;
  • Provide new park space to complement Dufferin Grove;
  • Replace the existing surface parking with below-grade parking.

Primaris would like to invite you their first public open house to learn about and provide feedback on their early ideas for the site and to share your thoughts on how the site should change.

Dufferin Grove Rink Update

As you may know, the opening of the Dufferin Grove Park Ice Rink has been delayed due to mechanical issues with the refrigeration system that Parks staff encountered when going through their annual start up assessment.

The refrigeration plant at this location is old and frequently inspected to proactively address any mechanical concerns. It is not unusual for sudden repairs or parts replacement from time to time and City staff are actively working to minimize the length of any delay. We're also working to replace the refrigeration system entirely as part of a project focused on the northwest corner of the park.

Based on the repairs needed and the progress made thus far, City staff expect that they can start making ice next week and that the rink can be in operation by December 15, 2018.

As the City completes the repairs, I will provide more information and you can always find status updates on all of the City's 54 outdoor ice rinks and trails at
