As we move into the summer season we are all pleased to see the return of many familiar events that had been impacted by the pandemic and the public health restrictions that were in place. As a community and a City we are all enjoying a return to these in-person celebrations.
This past weekend I was pleased to join with many Davenport residents and people from across the City as we celebrated the return of Do West Fest in person. This wonderful week-end long community event is organized by the Little Portugal Toronto Business Improvement Area association and it was a great opportunity to gather together as well as support local businesses.
And on Saturday, I was very honoured to be inducted into the Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame. It's a great feeling to be recognized by the community, I am very grateful to the nominating committee and to the community.
This week, the Italian flag was raised at Toronto City Hall to mark Italian Heritage Month. Tomorrow we will gather at City Hall to raise the flag of Portugal as we celebrate Portugal Day and this weekend everyone is welcome to enjoy the Portugal Day Parade starting at 11:00 am on Dundas Street West beginning at Lansdowne Avenue. Along with commemorating National Indigenous History month we also mark June as Pride Month with the return of the Pride Parade in person on Sunday June 26th.
This week the City also commenced registrations for the large number of summer programs being offered for residents of all ages across our City. The return of these programs is a great opportunity for residents to participate in a wide range of options to learn and enjoy the City this summer. Registration information can be found at this link and there are more details in this newsletter.
On Wednesday this week, I joined with the Mayor and others to mark the official launch of the Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation. With this launch, the TSHC officially commenced its operations as a seniors-focused social housing provider in Toronto. TSHC was created last year as part of City’s Tenants First plan and will have responsibility for operating the 83 seniors-designated buildings owned by the City. I am very pleased to have been part of this important step forward for seniors in our City as we work to meet their unique housing needs.
This summer is an opportunity for us all to join in the many events we have missed over the past two years, and I encourage everyone in the community to participate with your friends and neighbours. Below, I have outlined some of the many upcoming events that will be taking place in our community and across Toronto over the coming days and weeks, as well as my ongoing work at City Hall.
As always please do not hesitate to contact my office if we can be of any assistance. You can contact my office by email at [email protected] or by phone at 416.392.7012.
