This week, a City of Toronto staff report on ActiveTO recommends the return of Major Weekend Road Closures as well as a complete street pilot project along a section of Yonge Street to support the local economy and CaféTO with an expansion of the temporary ActiveTO cycling network.
As detailed in the report, City staff are recommending that Major Weekend Road Closures return in 2021. The dates and locations of closures will be determined in the coming months.
This program proved to be a quite popular and successful, with 92% of those surveyed wanting the closure to continue, 75% of people reporting being more active, more than a quarter reporting ActiveTO helped them start or re-start riding a bike and increased cycling engagement from women and people from BIPOC communities.
I understand that people have raised concerns about the Lakeshore West and Quiet Streets closures, and I am working on getting further information from City staff on this.
