Toronto's Housing Advocate, Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão's Statement on the National Housing Strategy

For Immediate Release

November 22, 2017

Toronto's Housing Advocate, Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão's Statement on the National Housing Strategy:

"I am pleased that the federal government has launched the National Housing Strategy, which provides a blueprint to deliver real results on affordable and social housing for Toronto residents. I welcome the return of federal leadership on housing.

During the last six years, the City of Toronto has championed housing as the bedrock of building strong neighbourhoods in our city and across Canada.

With the release of the National Housing Strategy we now have an opportunity to plan for a better city and improve the affordability of housing, while maintaining our valuable social housing homes.

Repairing and maintaining Toronto's social housing has long been a top priority for our city, and I expect the National Housing Strategy to prioritize investments in cities that have both demonstrated need and the ability to deliver repairs now.

With so many residents struggling to find and maintain a home in Canada's big cities, the opportunity presented by the National Housing Strategy cannot be missed. For this reason we will be working hard to ensure that all orders of government are working together in co-operation with housing providers to make this a success.

Housing is an issue that cuts across geography and income levels, and this new strategy makes much needed progress on our national response to affordability, housing supply, homelessness and social housing.

This strategy is the culmination of 20 years of community engagement and advocacy. The groundswell of support from strong voices within the non-profit, charitable, faith and private sectors has brought us to this point. Without their voices we would not be here today providing the opportunity to build a better future.

I am pleased to announce that I will be establishing a Deputy Mayor's Housing Advisory Council to guide Toronto's participation in the implementation of the National Housing Strategy. This group of external experts and persons with lived experience will provide us their best advice on how to maximize the opportunities arising from the strategy."
