July 2018 Events Update

Dear neighbours,

I hope you enjoyed the Canada Day long weekend with friends and family! Happy Canada Day! I am thankful to call this amazing country my home and be able to live in and work with a community committed to building on our values of opportunity, respect for each other, our diversity and equity.

The design concepts for the Wallace Emerson Park, Community Centre and Childcare facility will be presented at a community open house meeting on Wednesday July 18, 2018 at 6:30-8:30pm at the Galleria Mall(Old Zellers Space, 1245 Dupont St). I hope you can join me, City Parks, Forestry and recreation Staff and the Galleria Mall development team to learn more and share your ideas and feedback on these design concepts. Thank you to all the residents who have attended the previous open houses and meeting and provided your input on this important new facilities for our community.

Following the groundbreaking on our new Junction Triangle Library in June, the Toronto Public Library is hosting an Open house to  on Thursday July 19, 2018 at 7pm at Perth/Dupont Library branch (1589 Dupont St W). This will be an opportunity to share your ideas on the preliminary interior designs of our new 10,000 sq ft library that our community worked hard to secure.

At City Hall we took a huge step forward to create more housing choice by approving laneway suites in Toronto and East York District! I am so proud of the work we have done over past three years with my colleague Councillor MacMahon, Evergreen, and Lanescape to get us to this important milestone. Thank you to all the residents who have shared your ideas, feedback and support, we could only do this together! You can read more about the approved Changing lanes report by clicking here.

At City Council we recently approved the creation of 1115 new affordable rental and ownership homes in addition to 420 mid-range rental units through the City's Open Door Program and together these units will provide another important piece of the housing puzzle. This is the second year in a row we have met our target of 1,000 new affordable rental units per year  and it shows that our hard work is paying off. and We must continue to create more housing solutions and that is why I am proud that City Council approved the creation of a standing committee on housing for the next term of council to further empower the important work we are doing.

We also took action this month to accelerate the implementation of Toronto's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan with $22 million dollars to more than double the existing funding. This action will help the City to move quickly to implement the crucial road safety strategies and infrastructure changes needed to make our roads safer for everyone and to achieve our goal of zero deaths on our roads.

Though the NHL hockey season feels far away in the summer heat, the Toronto Maple Leafs made an exciting announcement with John Tavares signing on to play for his home team next season! Welcome home John!

Throughout the rest of July there are a number of other meetings, community events including the BIG on Bloor Festival on July 21st, and our two Ward 18 Movie Night's on July 13th at 8:30pm at Dovercourt Park and July 20th at 8:30pm at Perth Square Park.
